In Thailand, Loi Krathong will be celebrated on the 12th: it is a ritual in which offerings are made to the Goddess of Waters - in an expression of gratitude for providing life-sustaining water throughout the year (and we have seen more than enough the last couple of weeks). |

It is also believed that the offerings are made to beg her forgiveness for man's carelessness in polluting the pristine water that nourishes all life. |
|
Some believe that by setting the krathong (little boat) adrift, one symbolically casts away one's grief, misery and misfortunes. Coins are also placed in the krathong as offerings. |
|
For young couples, Loi Krathong is the time to make wishes for happiness together and success in love. |
|
Our office will be open as usual on this day - we might leave on time though, to get our krathongs ready for the evening and get forgiveness for all our sins of the past year. |

| Legal update - Anti-discrimination clause now in effect |
As part of the revised Labour Protection Act (Feb 2008), Thailand has introduced an anti-discrimination clause similar to rules applicable in other countries. |
|
In essence it comes down to this: people, who do the same job, should have the same compensation and benefits structure. |
|
Each business should carefully check his current compliance and amend where necessary - we will expect government officers more and more visiting companies to audit and potentially fine perpetrators! |
|
Look out especially for temps - interims if you have given them provident fund benefits (in case your regular staff is entitled to this benefit). |

Employment Outlook |
With the financial crisis and economic downturn hitting exporters, unemployment has gone up slightly (but overall still well below 1%). For professional and managerial positions, we see a lot of companies putting the brakes on vacancies as well as candidates refraining from taking up new jobs. |

In combination with the end-of-year effects (bonus payments), hiring companies become extra careful in their selection decisions and salary offerings. |
